H.O.P.E - Help Others Protect the Environment

H.O.P.E     Environment & Sustainability  October 2015 Update

Pupils present: Oscar C, Will J, Sam D, William H, Luke H, Reece M, Aishani D, Kristina W, Faye B, Rosie G, Grace C, Holly-Anne E, Ella P, Charlie E, Charlotte E, Emily M, Amy W, Polly H, Alice H

Staff present: Mr Sexton, Mr Stanley, Miss Fielden, Miss Warner, Mrs Moroney, Mrs Barrows

Decided to focus on three main areas, namely; ‘Energy’, ‘Recycling’ and ‘Bog pond and Science garden’

Brain stormed some of the things related to each area and they chose what they wanted to investigate and then work on strategies to improve our environment and create sustainability.

A letter has been sent by some of the boys to Mrs Tyrrel and a meeting to discuss what we spend on gas, electricity and water has been arranged. They are going to create a visual representation of this information and compare this year to the same time last year.

The information will be displayed in the school, put on our website and be explained to the rest of the school in assemblies.

One of the initiatives already in place is for pupils in each tutor group to be responsible for turning off lights when they are not needed and closing doors to keep the heat in. The first two names on the register were responsible for week one, then subsequent weeks the next two on the register. In this way everyone will have played their part and hopefully by the time it gets back to the first two, it will be noticeable how more aware we are as a school about what we waste and consciously make an effort to improve this.

Posters for round the school and smaller ones to go around all the various light switches in the school are being designed for use after half term.

Pupils are looking into how we can improve the recycling, so paper is used on both sides and any paper waste created is not contaminated by non-recyclables.  Posters are being created for this too.

The staff are aiming to become paperless for daily notices – using the learning platform to add information and using ‘smartboards’/projectors in all classrooms/assembly hall to project the information. This is to begin after half term.

With the help of the two Science staff, the pupils are investigating plants and wildlife as well as looking for any help we could tap into.

Mrs Moroney and Mrs Barrows have created a spreadsheet – ‘H.O.P.E. Annual Plan’ to represent what is being done and a time line. This will be updated through the year and adjusted accordingly.

We are very pleased with the dedication shown by the pupils and staff who give their Friday lunchtimes to promote ‘H.O.P.E and make a difference.
