Leave of absence in term time

A request for an absence in term time should be made by using the form below.

Changes to Leave of Absence Regulations (including family holidays)

Under previous legislation, schools had been able to authorise, at the discretion of the Headteacher, leave of absence for up to ten days where there are extenuating circumstances. We have always encouraged parents to avoid absences in term time and have liaised closely with local schools on this.

You may have read in the press or seen on TV news programmes in the Autumn of 2013 that the government amended key legislation relating to school attendance regulations. The government is insisting that schools across England and Wales take a much firmer stance against parents who remove their children from school and take a holiday during term time.

The relevant regulations were amended to remove the discretion headteachers previously had to grant leave for term time holidays in special circumstances. The regulations now state that headteachers may only grant any leave of absence if there are exceptional circumstances.

Any families considering taking holiday will now come under these new regulations and must accept that it would have to be unauthorised and that as a result a fixed pentalty fine may be incurred.

All requests for absence must be made on our official leave of absence request form. These can be downloaded from the link below and are also available at the school reception. These can then be handed in at the school office or emailed to Mrs Maidment, our attendance officer at pupilabsence@alamedamiddleschool.org.uk. Mrs Maidment then refers these to me for authorisation.

This is explained further in a leaflet produced by Central Bedfordshire, please see the link below.

I hope you will understand that the Governing Body and I must follow these new regulations and that you will work with us.

Miss M Warner

Headteacher

There are specific government guidelines which we will follow to determine whether or not a request is approved and these can be viewed at  the Central Bedfordshire  site :http://www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/learning/schools/pupil-support/family-holidays.aspx
